The City of El Monte is excited to announce the redevelopment of Pioneer Park located on Santa Anita Ave, adjacent to the Rio Hondo river! As part of the Gateway Transit Oriented Development district, the park will be developed into a new community open space, improving connections to the Rio Hondo bike trail and adjacent Metro Bus Station. The City is looking for community input on the future open space program and design!
This website will update periodically to share details about upcoming events, and design updates pertaining to the development of Pioneer Park. We hope to hear from you in the upcoming workshops to help us understand the community’s concerns and vision for Pioneer Park. We thank you in advance for your cooperation and look forward to hearing from you!
The Pioneer Park Design Plan is a community-driven effort designed to gather broad input and support from all stakeholders. The planning team will use both in-person and virtual tools to engage a wide range of voices, creating an inclusive and collaborative process.
The planning will take place in two phases:
Phase 1 - Focused on community engagement, site feasibility study, and concept design.
Phase 2 - Will focus on the creation of the final design based off community input.
Phase 1: Project Goals
Understand Park History
Engage with Community Members
Assess Site Conditions & Opportunities

Phase 1: Community Engagement & Visioning
Phase 1 focuses on bringing the community into the design process. Throughout this phase, there will be several opportunities for community members to get involved, including:
A community brainstorming workshop
Pop-up events around the neighborhood
Online engagement activities
At the end of this phase, community recommendation will be presented to the Pioneer Park team for review.
We are currently in the Discovery stage of Phase 1. We want to explore and learn about the park together with community members!
